• Alabama and Auburn are so aligned, •
• They would never break up the Iron Bowl ... or would they? •

• 2023 Bama Sports 2023 •

 Tuscaloosa, AL

We're not sure who needs to hear this, although the list would have to start with Finis St. John IV, Stuart Bell, Greg Byrne and Nick Saban. The thought may never have occurred to the University of Alabama’s chancellor, president, athletics director and head football coach, busy as they are with their own business, but let me offer some friendly advice in the wake of Black Friday in the Pac-12.

No Iron Bowl, no peace.

That’s not a threat. It’s a promise of forceful protest, the kind that brought UAB football back to life, should the need ever arise. It’s a reminder that in the league where it just means more, in the state where it means the most, nothing matters quite as much as Alabama vs. Auburn.

All those natties that built all those statues outside of Bryant-Denny Stadium are nice, but if you want to find the soul of college football in the Heart of Dixie, the search begins and ends on that fall day each year when the Tide and Tigers knock each other down, help each other up and lift the entire state.

No other game feels like it, and no other feelings linger like the ones that thrill you, crush you, move you when you witness it.

• Bama Places 131 Student-Athletes on SEC Spring Honor Roll •

• 2023 Alabama Sports 2023 •

 Tuscaloosa, AL

The University of Alabama placed 131 student-athletes on the Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Thursday.

The Crimson Tide was one of just three programs to post more than 120 student-athletes to the academic list. In addition to the academic honor, student-athletes from six Alabama programs advanced to postseason competition. A combined of 48 men's (19) and women's (29) track and field student-athletes earned the honor after helping the program to a strong NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championship showing. UA's NCAA Super Regional baseball (17) and College World Series softball (10) teams posted a combined 27 student-athletes, while the men's (6) and women's (4) golf programs had a total of 10 nods.

Additionally, rowing had 33 student-athletes earn the academic honor, while women's tennis had eight and men's tennis had five.

To earn a place on the honor roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.0 or better grade-point average for either the preceding academic year or their career and be a sophomore or better in academic standing. The spring list honors those student-athletes that participate in baseball, beach volleyball, men's and women's golf, lacrosse, rowing, softball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track and field. A total of 1,454 student-athletes earned the honor during the spring of 2023.

So far this season, Alabama has placed 271 students on the SEC fall, winter and spring honor rolls. Additional names will be added to the Tide's tally when the first-year list comes out later in June.

• Salary details for 12 Tide coaches who got new contracts •

• 2023 Alabama Sports 2023 •

 Tuscaloosa, AL

A fresh batch of Alabama coaching contracts were approved Tuesday and one stood out:

The five-year deal for new baseball coach Rob Vaughn calls for an annual salary of $900,000. That’s a significant bump from the deal his now-fired predecessor Brad Bohannon signed in 2021. It paid him $475,000 in 2022 with $25,000 annual increases.

Adding $400,000 to the head coach’s pay is significant but still leaves Vaughn as the 10th-highest paid SEC baseball coach according to a salary survey published last month by The Tennessean. Bohannon was the lowest-paid coach in the league before he was fired May 4 amid an investigation into gambling allegations.

Vaughn was one of 12 coaches who had deals approved in a brief meeting of the UA System Board of Trustees compensation committee. Jason Jackson, the interim head baseball coach who finished the 2023 season after Bohannon’s firing, got a raise to $300,000 as the associate head coach under Vaughn. Jackson made a total of $238,625 in compensation in the 2022 calendar year, according to a UA database.

A few other highlights of the committee’s actions:

Men’s basketball assistants Austin Claunch and Ryan Pannone got two-year deals through 2025. Claunch has a salary of $275,000 a year while Pannone will make $330,000. The Tide still has one assistant coaching spot to fill. For reference, the salary for former Alabama assistants who moved onto head coaching jobs elsewhere: Antoine Pettway made $425,000 last year while Bryan Hodgson made $425,000.

Softball coach Patrick Murphy got a five-year extension through 2028 at $530,000 a year. His last update came in 2021 worth between $475,000 and $515,000 a year through 2026.

Women’s basketball coach Kristy Curry got a four-year extension through 2027 at $550,000 a year. That’s a raise of $50,000 from the last deal approved in 2021.

Gymnastics coach Ashley Johnston got five more years through 2028 at $205,000 a year. That’s a raise of $20,000 after her first year on the job.

Men’s golf coach Jay Seawell got five more years through 2028 with an annual salary of $285,000.

Swimming coach Margo Geer got three more years through 2026 at $160,000 a year.

Track and field coach Dan Waters got a four-year deal through 2027 at $275,000 a year.

New women’s tennis coach Jonatan Berhane got a three-year deal through 2026 at $135,000 a year.

Head athletics trainer Jeff Allen also had his contract extended two years through 2025 with no change in compensation from the $400,000 annual salary.

Also of note, almost all of the contracts include stipends for a vehicle or a loaned vehicle. The stipends are between $600 and $700 a month.

• 85 Alabama Student-Athletes Earn SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll Accolades •

The University of Alabama placed 85 student-athletes on the 2022 Fall Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Thursday.

Alabama's football team saw 32 of its student-athletes earn a spot on the honor roll, including All-SEC honorees Kool-Aid McKinstry, Will Reichard and Bryce Young, among others. Also included was College Sports Communicators Academic All-District performer Seth McLaughlin, who graduated Summa Cum Laude in the summer of 2022 with a perfect 4.0 GPA and is currently pursuing his master's degree.

A total of 18 members made the list from the SEC regular season champion Alabama soccer team, which is coming off a record-breaking year including making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA College Cup. Meanwhile, the Alabama volleyball team had the best percentage of representation on last fall's list as 15 of the 16 members if the 2022 squad were recognized by the league.

The men's cross country (nine) and women's cross country (11) teams were also honored as they combined to put 20 names on the list. All-American Flomena Akekoi, who helped the Tide to a program-best fourth-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships last November, highlighted the women's side along with SEC Freshman of the Year Hilda Olemomoi. Meanwhile, Hillary Cheruiyot was recognized from the men's team after earning All-South Region honors last fall.

To earn a place on the honor roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.0 or better grade point average for either the preceding academic year or their career and be a sophomore or better in academic standing. The Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on the 2022 spring, summer and fall terms.

• 12 Tide Athletics Teams Score 90-or-Better in Latest NCAA Grad. Success Rates •

A total of eight University of Alabama athletics programs led the Southeastern Conference in Graduation Success Rate (GSR) figures released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tuesday.

Alabama maintained its overall GSR of 93 for the third year in a row, ranking the Crimson Tide in the top three among SEC schools. The average GSR for all NCAA Division I student-athletes is 89. This year's GSR spans the period covering student-athletes who attended the University during 2012-15.

The men's basketball team remained at a perfect 100 again this year, while the football team posted an 89, which ranks third in the SEC. It marks the 14th year in a row that the Tide football squad has ranked in the top four in the SEC by GSR. Alabama's football total is seven points better than the national average for the Football Bowl Subdivision.

In addition to men's basketball, Alabama also led the SEC with perfect GSR scores in women's golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis and volleyball.

Overall, 12 Alabama programs recorded a GSR score of 90 or better. In addition to the sports that had perfect scores of 100, four others posted scores of 90 or better – women's track and field/cross country (98), men's swimming and diving (97), rowing (97) and baseball (93).

Per the NCAA's database, Alabama is one of just two SEC schools to tally triple digits in GSR scores of 100 since 1998 with 108 and ranks second in the SEC in terms of scores of 90-or-better, trailing Vanderbilt by one with 184.

The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes those transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation, as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained.
