• Players sing happy birthday to Nick Saban •

Trick or Treat 👻 Happy Halloween Birthday to the 🐐!!

It may be Halloween, but, in the state of Alabama, it is also known by another name: Nick Saban’s birthday.

The Alabama Crimson Tide took a minute during its preparation for an SEC West cash with LSU on Saturday to sing to the Alabama coach, who turned 72 on Tuesday.

Saban was all smiles when he entered the meeting room. A cake with a lit candle was awaiting the coach, who blew out the candle before getting serenaded by his players.

Last week, during Saban’s weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” McAfee said Saban’s “next trip around the sun” will be his best yet. That’s when Saban, with his self-deprecating humor that McAfee appears to be able to bring out in him, shined.

“I hope so, but if you ask my mom, I still think after all these years she doesn’t know if she got a trick or a treat.”

The eighth-ranked Crimson Tide (7-1, 5-0), which already has a win over fellow contender No. 11 Ole Miss, can strengthen their hold on the division with a victory.

No. 13 LSU (6-2, 4-1) still would need to close with wins over Florida and Texas A&M, along with a Rebels loss. The Tigers have losses to No. 4 Florida State and Ole Miss in which their defense allowed a combined 100 points. Alabama fell to No. 7 Texas, though its offense has progressed since then.

The annual Nick's Kids Foundation Luncheon was held on Wednesday afternoon in The North Zone at Bryant-Denny Stadium with checks totaling just over $600,000 were presented to local and state non-profit organizations.

Last year, the City of Tuscaloosa and Nick's Kids Foundation celebrated the launch of projects like the Saban Center that will combine the Children's Hands-On Museum and Tuscaloosa Children's Theatre into a single location; the PARA of Tuscaloosa County all-inclusive playground; major contributions to the Welding & multi-purpose classroom facility and the Tuscaloosa Juvenile Detention Center; and the annual teacher's excellence awards luncheon.

• No Paul, Nick Saban legacy not on the line •

When Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa in January 2007, he was immediately the best coach in the SEC. Florida fans can argue that with BCS Championships in 2006 and 2008 that Urban Meyer was the best coach in the SEC.

But in 2007 and 2008, Nick Saban did more with much less, than Meyer did with much more.

In 2007, Alabama had six losses and at least four of them were against teams with clearly better rosters than the Crimson Tide. Those four losses were by a total of 22 points. A late turnover cost Alabama the game against No. 3 ranked LSU. Georgia, also with much better talent than Alabama, survived Tuscaloosa by a 26-23 score.

The 2007 Tide had wins over ranked Arkansas and Tennessee teams. It was clear in 2007 that Saban was bringing Alabama Football back quickly.

• Saban on missing CFP: ‘Why aren’t we in the playoffs’ •
• if we would have been favored? •

• 2023 Alabama Sports 2023 •

Nick Saban doesn’t have all the answers, but he certainly poses some intriguing questions.

The Alabama coach joined Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt to talk college football when, of course, the topic of the College Football Playoff came up. Do we want parity in the sport? Is there a better way to decide the CFP?

♦ Saban explains detailed Alabama game-week prep ♦

Nick Saban was more than halfway through last Thursday’s radio show when Harrison from Florence, Alabama called with a question.

He wanted to know how much game film and preparation goes into “feeling comfortable” with what any given opponent would do on a weekly basis.

“Whew, boy,” Saban began in what was a four-minute stream-of-consciousness explanation of the Alabama coaching plan from the moment they step into the complex on Sunday afternoon.

After going to church in the morning, Saban is in the office by noon to look at the previous day’s game film -- footage he said has to be graded before then. They’ll discuss offense, defense and special teams before Saban shifts the film study to the next opponent at 3 p.m.

“And I will watch the other team for six hours,” Saban said, “probably until 8:30, 9:00 at night.
