• 2023 SEC Football Awards Announced •

• 2023 SEC Football 2023 •

 Tuscaloosa, AL

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Dec. 6, 2023) -- Southeastern Conference champion Alabama claimed three of the SEC's individual football awards as voted on by the league's head coaches, it was announced Wednesday.

The Crimson Tide's Dallas Turner was named SEC Defensive Player of the year, Will Reichard was voted Special Teams Player of the Year, and Caleb Downs was selected as Freshman of the Year. LSU's Jayden Daniels was named Offensive Player of the Year, Georgia's Sedrick Van Pran was named winner of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, and Missouri's Eliah Drinkwitz was named SEC Coach of the Year. Missouri's Brady Cook was recognized as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year last week prior to the SEC Championship Game.

Daniels was named one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy earlier this week. He leads the nation in numerous offensive categories including total offense (412.2 yards per game), passing touchdowns (40), touchdowns responsible for (50), yards per pass attempt (11.7), yards per play (10.71), and rushing yards by a quarterback (1,134). His passer efficiency rating of 208.01 is the highest in FBS history.

Turner has totaled 50 tackles, including 13.5 tackles for loss. He ranks second in the SEC with nine sacks, and he is third in the league with 10.5 tackles for loss in conference games. This marks the fourth consecutive year an Alabama player has claimed SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors (Patrick Surtain II in 2020, Will Anderson in 2021-22).

Reichard became the NCAA's all-time career leader in points last weekend at the SEC Championship Game. He has made 20 field goals this season on 23 attempts and has been successful on all 53 PATs. For his career, Reichard has 539 total points.

Downs ranks third in the SEC with 99 total tackles to go along with a pair of interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He has registered at least 10 tackles in three games this season. Downs also ranks second in the SEC with a punt return average of 21.75 yards.

Van Pran has helped pave the way for a Georgia offense that averages 38.4 points per game (No. 9 nationally). The Bulldogs are on pace to record the school's best marks in history in average yards per play (7.12, No. 7 nationally) and average yards per game (482.9, No. 8 nationally).

Cook earned his bachelor's degree from Missouri in December 2022 and is currently pursuing a Master's of Business Administration. He is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Cook has thrown for 3,189 yards this season, which ranks third in the SEC and eighth on the Tigers' all-time single season chart.

Drinkwitz has led Missouri to a 10-2 record and a No. 9 national ranking. It is the sixth time the Tigers have won 10 games during the regular season. Missouri will face Ohio State in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on Dec. 29.

• ESPN names Bama, Barn players to mid-season All-America team •

• 2023 SEC Sports 2023 •

 Tuscaloosa, AL

As we sit here at roughly the halfway point of the college football season, it’s a good time for contemplation and evaluation.

ESPN made it a point to release its superlatives with the “midseason All-America team,” and, as you may have guessed, it does feature both Alabama and Auburn players. However, none of them show up on the offensive side of the ball.

The Tide had three representatives make the team, including two on defense. It makes sense considering Alabama ranks No. 15 in scoring and total defense in the country, giving up just 4.47 yards per play and just 291.6 yards a game.

Dallas Turner, ESPN says “has been consistent and productive in key situations.” The 6-4, 242-pound junior is the team leader in sacks (seven), tackles for loss (9.5), quarterback hurries (10) and forced fumbles (two). In July, Turner was asked about what he learned from Will Anderson Jr., the NFL draftee and former Alabama star.

Also making the list is defensive back Terrion Arnold, who “has emerged as one of the Tide’s best and most versatile defenders,” per the list. Arnold has made headlines as of late, not just for his play, but for his bear hug of Miss Terry, his on-field talk with Texas A&M receivers and, of course, his ability to survive a butt chewing from coach Nick Saban.

It would hard for any list not to be complete without kicker Will Reichard, who became the SEC’s all-time leader for career points with 486. Saban said Reichard is as good a player at his position as anybody Saban has coached at Alabama.

Auburn, meanwhile is represented by safety Jaylin Simpson, who is second nationally among safeties with four interceptions and is fifth on Auburn with 20 total tackles.

Among the notables is Notre Dame’s Howard Cross III, the son of the former Alabama tight end. For the roster and an honorable mention list.

• Which SEC schools have paid the most in field-rush fines? •

• 2023 Bama Sports 2023 •

 Tuscaloosa, AL

The Crimson Tide were one of four programs never fined for a football field rush since 2004. The others were Georgia, Mississippi State and Florida, although the Gators did pay a penalty for storming the court after a basketball win over Auburn in 2022.

The Tigers themselves stormed three times for football, all of which came against Alabama, in 2013, 2017 and 2019. Auburn also was fined after a basketball win over Kentucky in 2016. The other four field rush fine penalties levied after schools beat Alabama were handed out to Ole Miss (2014), Texas A&M (2021)

Alabama had never seen fans of two teams run the field until last season, when both Tennessee and LSU did it. It’s the first time fans of the Volunteers, who play Alabama in Tuscaloosa Saturday, had stormed the field after a football game during the SEC’s fine era.

The totals

Before the league changed its rules this year to make fines for field rushes go to the opposing team, Alabama football’s losses had made quite the contribution to the coffers of the SEC’s post-graduate scholarship fund. The last school that didn’t see its fans rush the field after beating Alabama was LSU in 2010.

From 2004 through the LSU game last year, schools were fined a total of $1,005,000 for their fans rushing the field against Crimson Tide.

By a significant amount, Auburn paid out the most after its Alabama wins, totaling $505,000 in fines. LSU was in second place, with $250,000.

When the fines first started, schools were charged $5,000 for the first violation, $25,000 for the second and $50,000 each for subsequent rushes. Those rules were changed, and each team’s violation counter reset, in 2015, when the league made the fines $50,000 for the first time, $100,000 for a second and $250,000 each after that.

In 2023, the counters reset again, while the fine amounts took another jump. First offenses are currently $100,000, second rushes cost $250,000 and the fines top out at $500,000 for subsequent penalties.

The fines also now go to the visiting school. Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne was part of a working group to find solutions and proposed stripping home games from offending teams, an idea that did not find large scale support.

“Fines don’t work,” Byrne said at SEC spring meetings in May. “Nobody is sitting in the stands saying ‘Well I’m not going on the field today because the university is going to get fined $250,000.’ Fans don’t care. I get it. But there has to be steps that are taken. Until you go through it yourself, and I have been on the field for a few stormings and it’s not fun. It’s dangerous. We’ve had some very scary situations that could have escalated even further.”
