• Bama Basketball Escapes Vandy With Win •

Tuscaloosa, AL

Alabama’s basketball team surely wanted to win its Southeastern Conference basketball game against Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium Saturday, but there were times you wondered. The Crimson Tide looked for all the world as Bama Coach Nate Oats has proclaimed one of the best teams in the nation, but also looked like a team that limped into the start of SEC play like the team that had lost five games.

Finally, by the barest, Alabama was a 78-75 winner over the Commodores, improving Alabama to 9-5 on the season, while Vanderbilt fell to 5-9.

Alabama next returns to Coleman Coliseum for its first SEC home game of the season, Bama hosting South Carolina at 6 p.m. CST Tuesday (SEC Network). The Gamecocks opened league play earlier Saturday with a 68-62 upset win over Mississippi State.

There were three early ties in the game and Vandy had a couple of leads in those first few minutes of single digit action, but Alabama’s three-point win came with Bama having the lead or tied for all but 12 seconds of the 40 minutes.

And yet…

With 34 seconds to play, Mark Sears made two free throws and Alabama had a 76-69 lead. An unguarded second chance trey by Jorda Williams cut it to a 4-point lead. Grant Nelson, usually deadly on free throws, made one and missed one with 19 seconds to play. Seven seconds later Jason Riverra-Torres, made a layup.

With eight seconds to play, Bama’s Rylen Griffen missed the front end of a one-and-one. With 4.7 seconds to play Vandy made one of two free throws to pull it to within a two-point game.

With 1.1 second to play, Griffen made the first of two free throws, making it 78-75, but fouled going for the ball after his miss.

With six-tenths of a second to play, Riverra-Torres missed the front end of the one-and-one and Bama had escaped.

• Alabama Drops SEC Opener to Ole Miss •

Tuscaloosa, AL

The Alabama women's basketball team dropped its Southeastern Conference opener to Ole Miss, 55-45, Thursday night inside Coleman Coliseum.

The home defeat snapped the Crimson Tide's six-game winning streak as the Rebels claimed their third consecutive win in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama (13-3, 0-1 SEC) led early before Ole Miss (11-3, 1-0) used a 19-2 run that spanned more than 10 minutes of the first half to take the lead for good.

The Tide would go on to trail by as many as 14 points with just over four minutes left to play, but went on a late 8-0 spurt, fueled by back-to-back treys from Sarah Ashlee Barker and Jessica Timmons, to claw back into it. However, Alabama could not get any closer than six points before settling for the final result.

The Crimson Tide was led by Sarah Ashlee Barker's 15 points, eight rebounds and two steals in the losing effort. Jessica Timmons hit double figures with 10 points matched Barker for the team lead with eight boards.

 Tuscaloosa, AL

Alabama basketball guard Kris Parker may not see the Coleman Coliseum court this year in real-game action. The Tide freshman is in the “process” of potentially redshirting, head coach Nate Oats announced Monday.

Parker was ruled out of UA’s season-opening win with an eye injury, according to multiple reports. A former four-star recruit, he didn’t appear against Morehead State or Indiana State last Friday.

“We’re in the process of talking about possibly redshirting Kris. Just to get stronger, get better at some things. I think he’s got a chance to be really good. I just, you know, we’re at that point in the process that he had the injury, he’s healed from the injury, he’s practicing. We’re in the process of talking through that right now.”

Parker was ranked as the No. 10 prospect in Florida in the class of 2023, per Rivals. He averaged 24.8 points and 14.2 rebounds per game at Crossroad Academy, which won its district title in Class 2A last winter. Parker is listed on Alabama’s roster as a 6-foot-9 guard weighing 195 pounds.

Oats has mentioned repeatedly throughout the start of the season that Alabama’s rotation will be whittled down eventually. The Tide is attempting to sort its best defensive lineups to pair with its offensive talent. The other scholarship guards on the roster include transfers Aaron Estrada and Latrell Wrightsell Jr., senior Mark Sears and underclassmen Rylan Griffen and Davin Cosby Jr.

The No. 22 Tide (2-0) host South Alabama on Tuesday and Mercer on Friday.

• Alabama men’s basketball wins 102-80 over Indiana State •

•2023 Bama Mens-Basketball 2023 •

 Tuscaloosa, AL

Alabama basketball moved to 2-0 on the season Friday, with a 102-80 win over Indiana State at Coleman Coliseum. Aaron Estrada led the Crimson Tide with 27 points and five assists, while Grant Nelson had the most rebounds with eight.

The Crimson Tide will face an in-state challenger on Tuesday, when South Alabama visits Tuscaloosa. Before that, here are three takeaways from Friday’s victory.

Closer than the score looked Alabama didn’t get off to a good start. The Sycamores roared out of the gates, scoring the contest’s first nine points while the Tide struggled to keep up.

“That’s a really good, very well coached team,” Alabama head coach Nate Oats said after the game. “We knew it was gonna be that way, we knew it when we scheduled them. They were even better than I thought they were gonna be when we scheduled them.”

Throughout the game, Indiana State was able to keep the score fairly close on the Tide. Isaiah Swope led the way with 17 points for the Sycamores, while Ryan Conwell had 16 and Julian Larry scored 15.

The Tide pulled away late to win the game by more than 20 points. But for an early-season non-conference matchup, Indiana State put up a solid fight.

Newcomers show out

Alabama had a lot of talent to replace for the 2023-24 season. During the offseason, Oats went looking in the portal.

The players he found there were a key part of leading the Crimson Tide to a win on Friday. Estrada especially showed out in the first half, scoring 22 of his 27 in that frame.

“We know what Aaron can do,” Oats said. “We’ve seen it and I think he’s improved, even since last year.”

North Dakota State transfer Grant Nelson has won the team’s hard hat award during the first two games. He had 18 points in the second half for a total of 20 to go with his team-leading rebounding performance against Indiana State.

If both Estrada and Nelson keep on track, they’ll be a major key to replacing Alabama’s lost star power.
