Tuscaloosa, AL
It’s almost time for Alabama football’s 2023 season to begin. The Crimson Tide are now less than two weeks away from opening the season at Bryant-Denny Stadium against Middle Tennessee State.
Questions still remain about Nick Saban’s squad. The Tide are replacing both offensive and defensive coordinators with Tommy Rees and Kevin Steele respectively. UA is coming off a two-loss season that saw it miss both the SEC title game and the College Football Playoff. Alabama also hasn’t named a starting quarterback yet, with Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson and Tyler Buchner all vying for the job. On Wednesday, Saban met with media for his final preseason camp press conference. Here’s what he had to say. -- Saban opens by saying he told players after the last scrimmage that now is the time to get ready for the season. -- Says players have done good job over last few days working through issues and problems. -- Saban says Tide want to have three or four players who can play the star position in the secondary. -- Saban praises edge-rusher Dallas Turner’s camp, says he has done “fantastic.” -- He reiterates that the decision at quarterback is up to the group. Says position is taking shape but notes that a named starter is not the end of the competition. -- Saban says Tim Keenan has been a “pleasant surprise” on the defensive line throughout camp. -- Saban says Crimson Tide did not practice as well in the team’s second scrimmage as it did the first. -- Saban asked what he remembers from his first day of class at Kent State: “Nothing. Do you know how long ago that was?” -- Saban says Kadyn Proctor has developed throughout camp. Says he’s been “pretty good” about learning from his mistakes and having Tyler Booker play next to him has helped. |
